August 26, 2025

This is the 13th annual overview of all active T1D human trials registered with the US FDA. JDCA analysts downloaded all type 1 diabetes trials registered on the clinicaltrials.gov database, reviewed each one, and categorized them by research type (see Appendix A for categories). The data was downloaded on July 1, 2025.

This analysis allows the community to see where the larger T1D research ecosystem places its focus, how these priorities have changed over time, and what percentage of clinical trials are working toward a potential Practical Cure today. Active projects in human trials right now hold the best chance of developing into a Practical Cure within the foreseeable future.

Of the 653 active T1D trials today, only 13—2% of all clinical trials—are working toward a Practical Cure. Since JDCA began tracking this information thirteen years ago, this percentage has never risen above 3%, despite a steady increase in the total number of T1D trials throughout the years.

JDCA will publish a comprehensive review of all Practical Cure projects in the weeks ahead.
